The Mildred L. Batchelder Award, honors the former executive director of the ALA Association for
Library Service to Children and her belief in the importance of good books for children in translation
from all parts of the world.
The award was established in her honor in 1996. It is a citation awarded to an American publisher for the most outstanding
children's book, orginally published in a foreign language and a foreign country, then translated into English and
published in the United States. The presentation is given at an ALA Annual Conference.
